Sooooooo, $2.00 (1 hour) actually = $3.07, and $4.00 (2 hours) actually = $5.21.
The bait and switch is happening already.
Next thing you know, the public will be told the meters are being installed "as a safety measure" (you know, like speed cameras are sold to the public).
So sad.

BBillings.......the "bait and switch" happened when some commissioners gave us the idea they were against paid parking, then after they were elected did a 180 to implement the program. What is that saying about a "leopard doesn't change his spots".
They will most definitely hike rates as revenues come in low. It will be up to the citizens to put an end to this program.

DouglasM,
....thus the reason for the recalls, i presume.
We weren't here for the campaigning, we are newbies, but we have been hearing and reading about the original bait n switch that started all this.
By the way - a tax on parking your car ?
CHICAGO doesnt even do that .....

So unnecessary and divisive. Hopefully the paid parking will go away as soon as possible and the community can chalk it up as a bad time in a wonderful community history.
I feel bad for the homeowners on the streets just outside of the paid parking grid....their streets are now loaded with cars. As 1 guy said to me..."it is not the money, it is the principal- I am not paying to park- I am going to park outside of the grid and walk a few blocks." My guess is he is not the only one with that attitude towards this paid parking debacle.

And what exactly does the 'conv' in conv fee stand for?? Please don't tell me it stands for 'convenience'---I'm afraid I'll fall off my chair laughing (or crying) and hurt myself!!
Of all the ridiculous statements made by the rapacious parking advocates in my formerly-favorite city , the fact that any of this is 'convenient' has to top the list...

CarolC.....I agree. I believe it is an overcharged work around on a credit card fee. The city started charging for credit card use recently, however, they can't call this a credit card service charge because the $0.87 fee exceeds the statutory allowance on such a charge. For example, the fee on 5 hours with a $10 base amounts to an 8.7% charge; far above what the law allows. So they call it a "convenience fee". It's sort of like calling something an "impact fee" when it really isn't.

Geesh, give it some time. My neighbors like the idea of paid parking. We live in the city, and it was easy to register our cars.
BBillings: Chicago is famous for undervaluing paid parking and selling parking revenues off parking to private equity for a one-time windfall. It is not cheap either. The only tax is for people outside the city who do not pay for the upkeep of downtown.
