FERNANDINA BEACH, FL — Fernandina Beach Main Street announced that The Happy Tomato Cafe & BBQ has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 First Quarter Curb Appeal Award.
For more than 15 years, owner Richard Bolton has taken pride in maintaining The Happy Tomato's welcoming appearance and charming outdoor dining area. The restaurant's al fresco seating, attractive landscaping, and well-kept atmosphere have made it a favorite destination for both residents and visitors exploring historic downtown Fernandina Beach.
"The Happy Tomato is one of my family's favorite places to dine," said LuLu Huppmann, Executive Director of Fernandina Beach Main Street. "We always enjoy sitting in the outdoor dining area. In fact, our dogs may love Richard the most because he always has bacon treats for them."
The Fernandina Beach Main Street Curb Appeal Award recognizes businesses that contribute to the beauty, vibrancy, and welcoming character of the downtown district through exceptional maintenance, landscaping, storefront presentation, and outdoor spaces. Quarterly winners are selected from nominations submitted by community members who appreciate businesses that help make downtown Fernandina Beach a special place to shop, dine, and explore.
Community members are encouraged to nominate businesses that demonstrate outstanding curb appeal throughout the downtown district. Nominations can be submitted year-round, and businesses receiving the most community support are considered for future quarterly awards. Congratulations to the Happy Tomato folks on the recognition - truly one of the gems on the island.
That pulled pork and pimento cheese sandwich of theirs is absolutely outstanding - and nap inducing.
Oh, and sometimes we just order some ice tea and sit in that wonderful outdoor area and let the granddaughters try to catch lizards.
