The real threat to Social Security isn’t language, it’s lawmakers like Aaron Bean

Posted

Congressman Aaron Bean wants us to believe the biggest challenge facing Social Security is confusing language. That’s what his new bill, H.R. 5284, the Claiming Age Clarity Act, is supposed to fix.

But here’s the truth: the retirement age, monthly benefits, and how they work have been explained clearly for years. Seniors aren’t asking for word games, they’re asking Congress to stop playing politics with the program they paid into their whole working lives.

What Americans really need isn’t a vocabulary lesson. We need lawmakers who will:

Protect Social Security from cuts or privatization.

Make the wealthy pay their fair share so the program stays solvent for future generations.

Ensure benefits keep up with the real cost of living.

Every time Congress distracts us with “clarity bills,” they’re hoping we won’t notice the bigger agenda: slowly chipping away at the guarantees that keep millions of seniors out of poverty.

If Aaron Bean and his colleagues truly care about seniors’ “financial futures,” they should promise, in plain language, to defend and expand Social Security, not tinker with its terminology.
