Increased police presence announced on campus

Student with gun arrested at Fernandina Beach High School

Posted

A Fernandina Beach High School student was arrested Thursday night after police received a tip and video showing the student displaying a gun to another student inside a school restroom.

Police and school administrators quickly identified the student, contacted the family, and took the student into custody. Authorities said the arrest was made without incident.

“The situation has been fully resolved with no remaining threats to the school,” the Fernandina Beach Police Department stated.

Out of what officials described as “an abundance of caution,” police said there will be an increased law enforcement presence on campus in the coming days to reassure students, staff, and parents.

No further details regarding the incident were provided by police officials.

I applaud whoever provided the tip and our local law enforcement for taking quick action. In Florida, gun owners with children under 16 are required by law to securely store their firearms. I cannot speak to this situation as the article does not mention how the gun was obtained but it is a reminder to securely store firearms (in the home, in cars, in boats) - whether youth around or not, it can prevent mis-use in terms of harming others or oneself. Guns are also regularly stolen from cars/boats and used for violence. Secure storage means: 1) ammunition is removed from the firearm 2) a locking device / cable lock is used or better yet a locked location like a safe or lockbox 3) ammunition is stored securely and separate from the firearm.

As the national leading cause among our children this is imperative. The website BeSmartforkids.org is a useful resource.

aeangarola: Yes, definitely! I would add that both parents and school curriculum should address gun safety and appropriate use.
