It’s that time of year — holidays are approaching, and soon we will see volunteers ringing bells to support the Salvation Army’s Hope House. It has been a tradition for more than 17 years. More than 275 people volunteer each year. Churches, businesses and organizations commit to one site. Several island churches commit to a site, including First Presbyterian Church, Amelia Baptist Church, and the Amelia Island Plantation Chapel.
The Salvation Army Hope House began in the early 1990s with a shared vision among a group of local residents who recognized great need in the low-income, drug-affected neighborhood where Hope House is located. Outgrowing their original location, they needed a bigger space. Local attorney Buddy Jacobs stepped up and offered the former Island BBQ for a $1 a year. Again, the community rallied and completed the necessary renovation. Jacobs, an advisory board member, donated the building in 2009.
During the 2024 kettle season, $82,379 was raised. The funds support the food pantry, free clothes closet, emergency rent/utility help, overnight sleepover Camp Keystone for children, back-to-school backpacks, emergency transport, and the Senior Angel Tree.
