The Amelia Island Museum of History is about to unveil a powerful new exhibit titled "Beyond the Veil: The Sisters of St. Joseph, Missionaries for Freed Children," on view from June 20 through Sept. 7, 2025. This original exhibit shines a light on the inspiring legacy of a group of French Catholic nuns who came to Florida in the aftermath of the Civil War to educate newly freed children.
The Sisters of St. Joseph — originally from Le Puy-en-Velay, France — embarked on a transatlantic journey in 1866, responding to a call from Bishop Augustin Verot to teach Black children in the South. Through courage, sacrifice and resilience, they established a network of schools across Florida and Georgia, overcoming language barriers, poverty, disease and racial segregation.
Based on the personal letters the Sisters wrote to their motherhouse in France, the exhibit brings their voices to life, offering an intimate glimpse into their faith, struggles, and unwavering sense of mission. Through these writings, alongside historic photographs, maps, artifacts and firsthand accounts, the exhibit traces their journey from France to St. Augustine, their early missions in Fernandina, and their tireless response during times of crisis, including yellow fever outbreaks and the Spanish-American War. The story culminates in the transformation of St. Joseph’s Academy, a once-segregated school that helped shape generations of local students.
Special Opening Event – June 20 at 6 p.m.
Sister Rosa Lopez, a sister of St. Joseph from St. Augustine, will open the evening with an engaging lecture. Known for her deep knowledge of the Congregation’s history and warm, captivating presence, Sister Rosa will share stories from the sisters' early years and present a broader timeline that highlights the Congregation’s continuing mission in Florida — even after the sisters left Fernandina.
Following the lecture, guests will enjoy exclusive first access to the exhibit, along with complimentary light fare and refreshments.
