A rare opportunity for local audiences arrives Tuesday, March 3, when acclaimed pianist Marc-Andre Hamelin joins the Grammy Award-winning Orpheus Chamber Music Orchestra for a one-time performance at First Baptist Church on Eighth Street.
Hamelin, an 11-time Grammy Award nominee, is celebrated internationally for virtuosity and musical depth. The New York Times called him “a performer of super-human technical prowess.” He will appear with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, a distinguished ensemble that makes Carnegie Hall its home. Unlike most orchestras, they do not play under the direction of a conductor, thus able to truly claim that they are ‘chamber’ musicians.
The March 3 program features highlights including Liszt’s transcription of Schubert’s “Wanderer Fantasy,” Op. 15, Hamlin’s own “Passacaglia for Piano and Strings,” and an orchestral arrangement of Schubert’s Piano Sonata in B-flat major, D.960.
