Amelia Community Theatre opens its newest show, "Enchanted April," on June 5 — a romantic comedy that is a tale of rediscovery for four women seeking a change of scenery and a way forward in their lives.

The play begins in 1920s England, post-World War I. Two women, Lottie and Rose, each feeling disconnected in their marriages, meet at their ladies’ club. They spot an advertisement for a villa rental in Italy that promises wisteria and sunshine, and Lottie convinces Rose that they should go there on holiday, without their husbands. To afford the getaway, they enlist two other women to join them, Mrs. Graves and Lady Caroline. Mrs. Graves wants a place “to sit quietly and remember,” while young Lady Caroline wants to feel unrestricted.

The Italian countryside lives up to its reputation, and even though the four women differ in social class and attitudes, they soon discover some common bonds. They begin to relax as they interact with each other, with Wilding, the villa's owner, and Constanza, the Italian housekeeper. Surprises abound when Lottie and Rose’s husbands show up, but perhaps they too will fall under Italy’s spell.

The cast of eight includes Amy Baker, Edie Blankenberg, Julian Jackson, Joy Kiser, Ina Mendoza, Joseph Stearman, Sue Weiner, and Craig Wickless. Director Jennifer Webber says, “Rejuvenation is a theme that uplifts this story from the start. There is something intoxicating about the Italian setting that reinvigorates relationships. I’m sure the audiences will go home feeling similarly affected.”

"Enchanted April," written by Matthew Barber, is based on a 1922 novel by Elizabeth von Arnim. It opened on Broadway in 2003, plus two movie versions have been produced. ACT presented the show in 2007 in its studio theatre.

There is a special opening-night party at 6:30 p.m. for the June 5 ticket holders, who will enjoy a taste of Italy with sweet treats and themed drinks.
