FERNANDINA BEACH — After weeks of disruption that reshaped traffic patterns across the island’s south end, Buccaneer Trail is set to reopen Thursday morning, marking a key milestone in the ongoing roundabout project at Amelia Island Parkway.
City and Nassau County project officials confirmed the roadway will reopen at 8 a.m. April 30, as scheduled, allowing east–west traffic to resume through one of the island’s most heavily traveled corridors. The reopening comes as Phase 2 construction continues on pace, with crews advancing utility work and roadway improvements tied to the planned roundabout.
While Buccaneer Trail traffic returns, the broader project is far from complete. Amelia Island Parkway will remain closed between Buccaneer Trail and South Fletcher Avenue until July, maintaining a major north–south disruption that has already drawn frustration from residents and commuters.
The roundabout at Buccaneer Trail and Amelia Island Parkway has been framed by transportation planners as a long-term safety upgrade, replacing a traditional intersection that had become increasingly congested as development intensified along the south end of the island.
Previous Observer coverage has highlighted the rationale behind the project: improve traffic flow, reduce high-speed collisions, and accommodate growing volumes tied to beach access, residential expansion, and tourism traffic heading toward South Fletcher Avenue.
Roundabouts, while sometimes controversial locally, are widely used in Florida transportation planning for their ability to reduce severe crashes and keep vehicles moving without signal delays.
The closure of Amelia Island Parkway has had tangible impacts well beyond the immediate construction zone. As previously reported, traffic has been diverted onto Fletcher Avenue and surrounding neighborhood streets, creating bottlenecks, longer commute times, and safety concerns for residents.
At peak hours, drivers have navigated congested detours and improvised routes, with some residents reporting aggressive driving behaviors and near misses as motorists attempt to bypass backups.
The reopening of Buccaneer Trail is expected to relieve some of that pressure by restoring a key north-south connection. However, with the parkway still closed, the broader traffic strain will persist into the summer months.
Project officials say construction remains on schedule, with continued work on underground utilities, roadway alignment, and the roundabout structure itself. Weekly updates are expected as crews move through the remaining phases.
The July target for reopening Amelia Island Parkway aligns with peak summer tourism season, a timeline that underscores the project’s balancing act between infrastructure upgrades and the island’s economic reliance on visitor traffic.

While this article has good info on the details, it lacks a broad perspective that frames the traffic problems on Amelia Island in general: a lack of affordable housing for workers and almost nonexistent public transportation. It's not just tourists that cause increases in our traffic on the island, but also all the necessary workers every day who have to travel here to support our restaurants, construction, hotels, and all the other aspects of living on the island. They deserve much more than they get.

Grateful to have this part open but I have to wonder if the engineers are actually drivers? Look at the Ariel Pic and tell me why the turns were not made wider? I drive a 35 foot motor home with car attached and it is very tight. Don't give this curbing 6 months and it will be destroyed.
