Sunny Florida – Not So Fast

Posted

When you least expect it, your routine is interrupted by a true “aha” moment. We had such a moment last week. Snow. Some people argue it really wasn’t snow but more ice.  Youngsters in Nassau County didn’t care if it was ice or snow they raced out to play. Tiny snowmen appeared on Facebook. Attempts at snowball fights didn’t work out as expected, but were attempted. A friend with small children told me how her boys were so excited about their first snow that they saved some snowballs in the freezer. The world stopped, at least in Nassau County, and people stayed inside and cozy or played in the snow.

Those of us who moved to Florida from northern snowy climes were not as excited as those who have never seen snow. Big Guy and I remember fun snow days, but also remember the dark side of a snowy day living in the Midwest - shoveling heavy, wet snow, bundling up, and driving on icy roads.

Mixed memories, mostly good. Outside with our kids building snowmen (persons), grabbing saucers and sleds, and finding the steepest local hill. So, what is so magical about snow? It appeals to all the senses. You can feel it, taste it, and there is even a certain smell to it. When snow blankets landscapes, the quiet is all-encompassing.  Research suggests a couple of inches of snow can absorb up to 60% of sound, which means the world really does seem quieter (and more peaceful) when it’s coated in white.

Snow brings out a spirit of adventure. No school, no work? Let’s go out and play. Snowmen, snow angels, snowball fights, cross-country skiing, or sledding on the neighborhood hill. After playing in the snow, what is better than a cup of hot cocoa, maybe even with mini marshmallows? And maybe chili for dinner?

Actually, last week’s snow was not the very first in the neighborhood. Famously, the Dickens on Centre yearly celebration of things Dickens brought in 10 uniquely decorated themed giant snow globes. The one-hour experience accommodated up to six people and included a private snow globe, a charcuterie grazing box, and a bottle of spring water. So, how much does this unique experience cost? Base price: $280 for four people.

So last week Nassau County had its snow/play day. It will be remembered by all as that day in January 2025 when it snowed.
