Snow hits Fernandina, icy roads pose problems

Snow hit Fernandina Beach early today on Amelia Island and ice covered roads had police out in force to monitor traffic and mishaps.

Police officials reported numerous accidents due to ice covered roads and traffic on the the Shave Bridge to Amelia Island was being controlled by officers as tempertures early this morning were below freezing.

At 7:30 a.m. the temperature was 31 degrees. Rain had begun at 6 p.m. Tuesday and turned to ice shortly after midnight. Ice was reported at the city marina at around 3 a.m. and snow began about an hour later.

Nassau County Sheriff's Office issued the following alert:

URGENT TRAFFIC ALERT - MAJOR CLOSURES ❄️ 9:15 AM UPDATE
I-95:
NORTHBOUND: Closed at SR200 (All traffic must exit, All NB traffic being routed off at SR 200)
SOUTHBOUND: Closed at Georgia/FL line.
US-17:
Both directions closed at Duval line (Ice/crash)
No injuries
Ice treatment in progress
OTHER:
✅ ICW: Open, salted (7:30 AM), monitored
✅ Most county roads clear
AVOID I-95 AND US-17 UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE
